On National IPA Day, Survey Says Nearly One in Four Beer Drinkers Are IPA Lovers

In honor of National IPA Day today (Aug. 4), The Lagunitas Brewing Company commissioned a national survey. The survey – conducted online by The Harris Poll among more than 1,000 U.S. beer drinkers ages 21 and over – showed that nearly one in four beer drinkers age 21+ (23 percent) consider themselves an IPA lover. In addition, a total of 22 percent of beer drinkers age 21+ admit they have never tried an IPA.

For those who want to wear or express their affection for IPAs, select bars and restaurants will be passing out free Lagunitas IPA Day kits filled with pins, bandanas, T-shirts, koozies and openers.

Also of note: According to the survey, while more than one in three beer drinkers age 21+ (36 percent) know that IPA stands for India Pale Ale, one in 20 (five percent) actually thinks it means International Puppy Appreciation.

Interestingly enough, Lagunitas embraces both meanings and extends the National IPA Day celebration invitation to IPA fans and their four-legged companions. Lagunitas also honors this meaning through its various charitable givings to animal shelters including a national partnership with The Best Friends Animal Society.

Lagunitas is a true "OG" of IPA since fueling its popularity nearly 30 years ago. While it has grown to be global, it’s still local at heart for the company. In fact, Mayor Teresa Barrett of Petaluma, Calif., where the craft brewer is headquartered, officially proclaimed the first Thursday of August as Lagunitas IPA Day. She’ll even hold a toast today at the Lagunitas Petaluma TapRoom & Beer Sanctuary.

Survey Method: This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of The Lagunitas Brewing Company from June 23-27, 2022, among 1,319 beer drinkers. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +2.8 percentage points using a 95 percent confidence level.
