Father's Day is right around the corner, and if Mother's Day traffic was any indication, your bar or restaurant will most likely be busy with families dining out.
In fact, according to Toast, in 2023, same-store GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) at full service restaurants on Father’s Day was 35% higher than an average Sunday. This increased business was driven by higher transactions: There were 16% more transactions at FSRs on Father's Day versus the average 2023 Sunday. It was also driven by higher spending: The average ticket size on Father's Day 2023 was $112 — a 16% increase over the average Sunday ticket.
Just what are diners spending that extra money on? For one, like Mother's Day, brunch is big, with 37% of all transactions happening during brunch hours and omelette sales increasing by 204% when compared to the average day in June. Dads are also opting for meat-centric meals with BBQ sales increasing by 98% and steaks by 53% when compared to the average day in June.
Meals are also lasting longer as more guests opt for dessert on Father's Day, with desserts and pastries coming in at 62% higher than the average June Sunday.
What's not seeing a surge on Father's Day? Salads, with a 26% decrease in sales. Consider skipping the greens on your Father's Day menus.
Alcohol consumption is also down, with retaurant guests drinking 10% less alcohol on Father's Day 2023 at full-service restaurants than the average Sunday in 2023. Gin (26%) and whiskey (21%) took the biggest hits, but cider (27%) and beer (10%) saw growth. Overall, guests still consumed 5% more alcohol on Father's Day celebrations compared to Mother's Day festivities.
