New Report Empowers Operators to Make Better Repair & Maintenance Spending Decisions

86 Repairs – the repair and maintenance (R&M) management platform built for the restaurant industry – released The State of Repairs report. The annual report offers restaurant operators valuable insight into repairs and maintenance data.

According to 86 Repairs, today's restaurant operator is pressed for time and resources from all directions – juggling the customer experience, high employee turnover, and navigating changes in the supply chain. Repairs might only become a priority once a critical repair need has forced them to stop service. And routine maintenance can fall through the cracks because of inconsistent processes across locations and staff, along with frequent labor turnover.

“Restaurants spend $28 billion on R&M and lose $46 billion on equipment downtime every year,” said Daniel Estrada, co-founder and CEO of 86 Repairs. “And yet it's very hard for operators to really manage R&M.”

The 2022 State of Repairs report offers never-before-seen data on equipment repairs that isn't found anywhere else. It highlights numbers from 86 Repairs' platform, including vendor performance and equipment manufacturers, so operators can benchmark where their business stands and make more informed R&M decisions with speed.

A Few Highlights from the 86 Repairs Report:

  • R&M is the most expensive, controllable line item on a restaurant’s P&L. Based on internal data, 86 Repairs estimates that $35 billion is spend on new equipment every year.
  • Plumbing infrastructure – the system of pipes that allow fluids to flow in and out of a restaurant – is a common issue. In fact, more than 25 percent of 86 Repairs’ top repair requests are associated with plumbing infrastructure.
  • Out of all the service requests that 86 Repairs received for reach-in refrigerators at restaurants in 2021, almost half were because the unit was running too warm. Food costs are one of the biggest expenses a restaurant has – so when the refrigerator isn’t temping properly, it opens a huge margin on potential product losses.
  • HVAC (an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) repairs are the most expensive out of any of the top 10 types of equipment repairs with an average invoice price of more than $1,000 per service request. The top three equipment symptoms include: Not Cooling (37.4 percent), a Leak Present (16.7 percent) and Not Heating (8.4 percent). Restaurants should be proactive about HVAC preventative maintenance, suggested 86 Repairs
