Nightclub & Bar Announces the 2013 Top 100

Another year of significant growth is revealed by the industry’s
only revenue-based roster of top nightclub, bar and lounge venues.

In releasing the 2013 Nightclub & Bar Top 100, the industry's premier trade show and media outlet revealed ongoing growth for the nation's leading nightclub, bar and lounge venues.  Developed in partnership with Chicago-based hospitality market research firm Technomic Inc., the 2013 Nightclub & Bar Top 100 is the only revenue-based ranking of nightlife venues.

Two Las Vegas nightclubs broke records in 2012, as XS Nightclub and Marquee Las Vegas each generated annual revenues in excess of $80 million and delivered results so similar that they share the #1 spot on the Top 100 list. Marquee, the mega-club in The Cosmopolitan, continued to draw tremendous crowds and feature top-notch entertainment in its third year of operation, while the luxurious XS remained a hot spot within the Wynn Las Vegas, attracting high-profile partiers.

"We couldn't be happier with the results demonstrating the ongoing growth in the hospitality industry," says Jon Taffer, President of Nightclub & Bar Media Group and Star/Co-Executive Producer of Spike TV's Bar Rescue. "All the venues that made the list are excellent examples of the hard work and dedication that goes into running a high-volume nightclub, bar or lounge."

While Las Vegas venues earned 21 slots on the 2013 Top 100 roster, venues from other major markets including Southern California, Miami, New York City, Chicago, Dallas and Washington, DC also made the cut. In addition, nightclubs and bars located in areas as varied as Pensacola, Fla. and Bloomington, Ill. also appear. While many clubs are making repeat appearances on the Top 100, several newer venues also qualified.

The Top 100 roster is developed through a rigorous program involving primary research and analysis of secondary sources. The primary research included a survey conducted from October 9 until December 7, 2013, which generated more than 1,400 responses. Gentlemen’s clubs are not included in the roster. The 2013 Nightclub & Bar Top 100 list is available here.

The 2013 Top 100 venues generated $1.5 billion in total revenue. More than two-thirds (68.2%) of operators surveyed experienced revenue growth in 2012, and nearly two-thirds of them (31.4%) reported revenue growth in excess of 10%. Once again, the top nightclub and bar venues outperformed the industry overall.

"The bar and nightclub segment grew 3.9% in 2012, and these venues achieved strong results during a year of slow economic recovery. This demonstrates not only the relevance of the concepts but also the strength of their operations and promotional programs," said David Henkes, Vice President and On-premise Practice Leader at Technomic. "They're connecting with consumers and engaging them with entertainment and service elements that are driving success."

Entertainment, service and operations will be among the topics discussed by select 2013 Top 100 operators at a Super Session panel taking place during the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas, March 19-21, 2013. In addition, a lavish celebration at Marquee Las Vegas on Wednesday, March 20 will honor the 2013 Top 100 operators

Top 100 Methodology
The 2013 Top 100 list was developed by Nightclub & Bar in partnership with Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based hospitality market research firm, using primary and secondary research. An online survey of operators was conducted from Oct. 9 to Dec. 7, 2012, and yielded primary data from 1,444 nightclub, bar and lounge locations, from which key information and insights were generated. Secondary research involving public databases and sources, scans of major metropolitan markets and industry resources provided additional data points. Total revenues are presented in ranges for calendar year 2012; specific ranking is determined by estimated midpoint of annual revenue. Gentlemen’s clubs are not included in the roster. Concepts included can operate in no more than five locations and must be operating all 12 months of the 2012 calendar year; an exception was made for venues affected by Hurricane Sandy. An asterix (*) on the lists indicates a Technomic, Inc. estimate based on industry research.
