How to Turn Quality Draft Beers into Liquid Gold

Bar and restaurants live on razor-thin margins, so finding places to tighten up or increase profits matters. One area to focus on for increased opportunities is draft beer.

According to CGA by Nielsen IQ’s Spring 2022 On-Premise User Survey (OPUS), beer is the number-one category choice in the bar and restaurant channel, with 46% choosing beer over other beverage options, and 77% of respondents saying they prefer to drink draft beer.

Why is draft beer preferred to cans or bottles? According to the CGA Spring 2022 OPUS, three main factors influence a consumers’ choice to drink draft beer:

  1. Draft beer is generally fresher than bottled beer.
  2. They prefer the taste of draft beer.
  3. They prefer to drink from a glass rather than a bottle or can.

The same survey also found that 56% of beer drinkers are willing to pay more money for a better-quality beer, with 38% of consumers saying “high-quality drinks” are an important factor in deciding what they will order.

It’s not enough to just serve a draft beer—establishments must be dedicated to ensuring all draft beers are always properly poured, served, and cared for. After all, as Peter Camps, Heineken’s Global Draught Master & Brewmaster says, “The only reason for ordering a second beer is the quality of the first.”

Fortunately, Peter will be educating bar and restaurant owners about how to ensure they are serving the highest quality draft beer in a live demonstration at the 2023 Bar & Restaurant Expo’s Nxt Stage at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, March 28 titled “How can you turn quality draft beers into liquid gold?”

The session will teach attendees how to become a true master in pouring and serving top quality draft beers. Ensuring that you maintain excellent quality standards improves the entire beer experience for the consumer, and in turn, positively impacts ROS for all beers served.

Topics covered will include:

  • Key industry insights
  • Tips for optimizing draft selection
  • The importance of clean glassware
  • The enemies of beer
  • The function of foam

By the end, participants will be able to master the art of pouring a quality draft beer. They can then take what they learned back to their teams to improve the draft beer experience, leading to happier customers, and ultimately, more profits.
